Clayton Donald Groves,
known as Sam to family and friends passed away March 19, 2010 at Avow Hospice, Naples, Florida. He was born Oct 28, 1923 in Bonavista, Newfoundland to Donald Morris and Annie Isabelle (Emberly) Groves. In 1929 his family immigrated to Boston, MA. He was raised in Malden and attended Malden Schools.

Sam enlisted in the Army Mar. 10, 1943 in the 295th Engineer Combat Battalion. He saw action in every major campaign in Europe from Omaha Beach, Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge and the fall of
Berlin, Germany.

Feb 14, 1947 he married Phyllis Lorraine McRae; to this union were five children, Robert, Ronald, Dean, Wendy and Susan. After 56 years of marriage Phyllis passed away June 15, 2003 in Port Charlotte, Florida. On Dec 21 2005 Sam married Lucille Baringer of Saugus, MA and Naples, Florida.

Sam resided most of his adult life in Melrose and Reading, MA. As a member of the Bricklayers & Mason Union Local # 3 for over 40 years, he worked for A. Belanger & Sons on many of the buildings and bridges in and around the Boston area. Sam enjoyed boating, the water and spending weekends on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH for many years. After his retirement he and Phyllis moved to Port Charlotte, Florida.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis, son Ronald, and his 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

He is the husband of Lucille (German) Baringer and the late Phyllis L. (McRae) Groves. Father of Robert Groves & his wife Lynette of Sequim, WA, Dean Groves & his wife Patricia of Melrose, Wendy Gage & her husband Keith of Merrimac, Susan Perrotta & her husband Richard of West Warwick, RI and the late Ronald Groves. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, March 27th at 8:45AM. A Funeral Mass in Sam's memory will be celebrated at St. Margaret's Church, 431 Lincoln Ave. Saugus, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4:00-8:00PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
